CHICAGO CARPERS

Big congrats to Paulo Nestor, Marcin Szydlowski and Michas Gliksman on their recent session together in Chicago. All three American Carp Society members have teamed up and are producing some great Carp Videos on their new Youtube channel showcasing the great sport that can be had in Chicago. We have it on good authority that the guys will be adding subtitles in the near future…drop by and give them a sub and like for stepping up and making it happen!

Awesome shot from the drone…

A big shoutout to our friends over at Century Rods in the UK for sharing our custom ACS MIA MK3 build on their instagram page! Arguably one of the finest rod blanks built in the world today, with unparalleled craftsmanship, quality and durability, it was an easy choice for us here at the American Carp Society to go with Century. Ryan White, master craftsman, builds each rod by hand from the ground up, no machines or mass production…old school! Ryan is featured in the latest American Carper Publication ‘American Gold…A New Dawn’ with a wonderful in-depth interview.

MEMBER OPPORTUNITIES

MONKEY CLIMBER

A few years ago we started our ‘Hands Across the Ocean’ campaign with the goal of creating a shorter distance between the US Carping scene and that of our brothers and sisters overseas. With the help of Subsurface Journal, who helped us distribute ‘The American Carper’ and Monkey Climber Magazine, who published a wonderful piece featuring our members, as well as the reciprocal collaboration with The Carp Society in the UK and the Scottish Carp Group, we were able to make that gap a little smaller.

We are now pleased to bring American Carp Society Members a unique opportunity to once again be featured in the ever-cool ‘Monkey Climber’ publication. Our friend Gio Van Hooren of MC and Sean have been discussing a new collaboration and it was decided that each year an American Carp Society member’s piece will be chosen for inclusion in Monkey Climber, a truly prestigious opportunity for our members that have a passion for documenting their travels by the water’s edge! In true MC style, there should be no product pushes, rig descriptions or “how to” pieces…or in Gio’s words:

“No brands, rigs, BS in the pieces themselves, only proper stories!”

For all of you that have a passion for photography and the written word…here is a unique opportunity to be featured in the most popular cult, carp publication in the world today!

Please send all articles for consideration to info@americancarpsociety.com. There are only two MC publications released each year. Please make sure that the piece has some great pictures to accompany it, as this will obviously be taken into consideration. The photos will need to be large enough in size for print quality. Both ‘Traditional’ and ‘Carp on the Fly’ pieces will be considered. (He especially loved the AC4 Buffalo photos and ‘Carp on the Fly’ pieces that we sent him.)

All entries will automatically be considered also for the American Carper Vol 5 publication.

Please reach out to us here if you have any questions!

Gio…

Full movie to be released later this month

This has to be one of the very best American Carp Society Member generated videos that we have come across..brilliantly shot and edited! Congratulations to Paul Cioca on this latest film…we couldn’t help but want to shine a spotlight on his great work!

The ‘Fall Campaign” follows American Carp Society member Paul Cioca and Bill Anastasiadis on an epic adventure spanning two long weekends in September of 2020. The previously un-fished island location in Kawarthas, Canada was booked on a whim…a gamble which ended up paying off. The island wasn’t an easy spot to fish being particularly difficult because of heavy weeds and zebra mussels. With its ups and downs, the campaign overall proved to be a great success, producing quite a few quality fish and memorable times.

Join Paul and Bill in this great documentation of the session together in the trailer below.

Finding Carp In Rivers

By: Brandon Tourigny

80% of the catchable fish are only in 20% of the river. Whether or not this statistic is true, I have no idea but what I do know is that like in any environment carp live in, they are predictable. River systems are no different, and if you know where to look it won’t take you long to find carp.

Some river carp seek out similar haunts that lake carp would. Keep an eye out for mud flats or shallow backwater sloughs. These areas are great spots to find the classic tailing carp in shallow water. If you are on a river that floods frequently, keep an eye on those water levels! If the banks flood for an extended period of time flood plains could be a short lived hot spot. For example; when I lived in Florida I noticed that the best time to target grass carp would be when water levels went above the high water mark, allowing the fish to reach grass they normally wouldn’t be able to (this tip applies for lakes as well).

Another key area worth searching in rivers are banks that don’t have an immediate drop off. If shallow water extends well past the bank, and slowly transitions into a drop off, carp will come on and off these shallow banks to feed. Similar to this, keep an eye out for shallow areas opposite the bend in a river. I’ve noticed on rivers like the Hoosic in upstate New York, that the bend in a river will be deeper and the bank opposite that bend will be much shallower. Carp there liked to hold in the deep pools until it was time to feed, then move onto that shallower bank.

Take these general guidelines, spend some time on Google maps creating a game plan, and apply them to your local river! If you do, you’ll get to enjoy the scenic beauty of rivers that trout anglers enjoy while chasing our preferred sport fish!

We are pleased to announce the addition of two new officially sanctioned American Carp Society guides…Nate Satterelli from Oklahoma and Ike Rhodes from Illinois. Both of these guys have a huge passion for the fish and also in helping others experience the same. Both anglers target them specifically on the fly in their respective states. More on both anglers later this month!

Drop by the guide page and check out Nate, Ike and our growing family of guides across the USA.
