AMERICAN CARP CULTURE : CONTEST WINNER

Congratulations to Adam Tomlin (@a.tomlin93) for winning our December American Carp Culture Contest with this truly spectacular mirror. This fish is simply breathtaking. Cheers to you Adam for such a remarkable and memorable capture.

Adam Tomlin:

Originally a flop photo that ended up really speaking to me. The white splotchy background really helped isolate the moment in the photo and you can really notice the struggle in my face while I try to lift this heavy fish as I look down at it with a heavy gasp not just because of the weight but amazed at what I had just achieved and also the fishes anal fin getting caught in the net, a common annoyance for carp anglers when doing self takes...and I remember thinking what a pain it was at the time because I was going to have to lift this fish again for another 10 second self timer and how many more times I was going to have to do it to get some good shots lol. So kinda sums up a lot in one photo. The reality in carp fishing can be messy, heavy..... and wonderful all in one picture.

intro to leaders

By Brandon Tourigny

In the grand scope of fly fishing gear, I believe the importance of proper leader setups is not discussed nearly enough when preparing new fly anglers for the water. It is glamourous to talk about buying the perfect fly rod, or a beautiful new reel. But what about leaders and tippet? Very literally, your leader and tippet are your life line to the carp you hook into. Get this equation right and you will bring many carp to hand but get it wrong and it will spell disaster for you.

For those of you who are new to fly fishing, the leader is the monofilament line that connects your fly line to the fly. Most store-bought leaders now come with a pre-made loop that connects to welded loops on modern fly lines. These on average are 9ft pieces of mono that are tapered down to a lighter end that your fly can be tied onto. When selecting carp leaders, I recommend finding 9ft leaders that taper down to 10lb test.

Because carp have their reputation of being finicky to uphold… connecting your fly to mono is typically a fool’s errand. Light can reflect off of monofilament which carp will see. To avoid this, cutoff the last two feet of mono and replace it with a 10lb fluorocarbon tippet. The reason for this being that light can pass through fluoro, thus staying nearly invisible in the water.

Another reason for bringing tippet with you is at times a 9ft leader will spook the carp. In high pressure fisheries, carp will spook at the sound of fly line hitting the water. The more distance you can put between your fly and fly line the better in these situations. Anglers routinely lengthen their leader to 10 or 12ft to fool extra spooky carp.

Next time you’re at your local fly shop remember to not spend all of your time day dreaming about the newest fly rods, and a little more time ensuring you have the perfect leader and tippet set up to guarantee your success. Tight lines everyone!
