NOTABLE CAPTURES

July was a hot one for many of our members across the USA. With the dog days of Summer now officially upon us, temperatures will be increasing through to the end of the month in many states. Please be mindful of the welfare of the fish when it’s really hot…the oxygen levels will be down on many of the smaller waters and their handling at this time of year is crucial. Please make sure that they are well and truly revived after capture, before releasing them. These photos below certainly caught our attention in the month of July. Congratulations to everyone on the success of their angling sessions this past month…We appreciate all of your tags and mentions, and can’t wait to see what everyone is catching over this next month! Don’t forget to tag us #americancarpsociety #jointheguiltyones and tag @american_carp_society in your stories!

carp care BY: DON LOW

You can clearly see from the photos that this fish is a repeat capture. In similar conditions and on the same spot, I had her twice, four weeks apart, and she was up in weight by 8 oz. This goes to show that if we look after the Carp, we really don’t do them any harm. The first capture I noticed some open sores on the under-belly. On the second capture, these were healed because I applied carp care products, however, she now had some additional nicks and scrapes. Again, some tender loving care was applied.

We all practice catch and release and I am sure that every ACS member uses a mat and handles their captures with respect, but we can do more to help our prize recover quickly so that either ourselves, or another angler, can enjoy catching these wonderful creatures again someday and hopefully in better condition than before.

Photo 3.JPG

I like to use carp care products on any lifted scales, open sores, and in the mouth area where the hook will likely have caused some form of damage (hopefully light). For the mouth area I utilize low viscosity care products that have antibacterial and antifungal ingredients. They reduce infection and assist in the fish’s natural healing process. Lots of companies have these types of products.

For any damage on the flanks of the fish, I use Propolis by Korda, which in my opinion is not really suitable for the fish’s mouth. Propolis is a natural compound derived from bee’s wax. It is quite a thick liquid and forms a waxy seal which is an antibiotic due to its antimicrobial properties. Clean the injury with a cloth or paper towel, then apply liberally before gently dripping some water on the area with your hand. Upon contact with water, propolis becomes insoluble and helps prevent pathogens or debris entering an open wound.

Hope this tip helps. Tight lines.

There were some great shots this month that we wanted to feature in the photography section…thanks to all of you that are getting out in the heat and tagging us with your captures and shots.

First up is this awesome shot of Michael Gliksman’s drone by Paulo Nestor…It just goes to show you what we can now do with technology in the quest for our beloved species.

We love this next shot…the vibes, the lighting and of course the Carp. Another great shot by Zack Voelker with his daughter Stella.

And speaking of drones, it’s pretty safe to say that this great drone shot from our Events Coordinator, Richard Cervantes, in California, was taken on a very clear day with not a cloud in the sky.

Odom Wu has been having a great Summer on the water…here’s another one of his captures with a beautiful composition close up of the fly.

Membership News.png

We thought it would be a good idea to take advantage of the technology that is now available to us all via Zoom to stay in touch, share ideas and thoughts and also to welcome new members as they join The American Carp Society!

Starting in September we will have a monthly Zoom introduction session for all new members coming into the American Carp Society as well as ongoing Zoom sessions for any members that wish to join us. It will give us a chance to say hello to everyone, share our mission and introduce new members to the community in the new members sessions. Our website is pretty in depth and an introduction to all of our social media outlets, website content, referral programs and angling opportunities to new members will help to build a stronger community together and bridge some of the distance across the country.

We will also be utilizing Zoom for special guest sessions and special announcements through our 'TOWN HALL' sessions where you can join us, collaborate and share your input. More details will be forthcoming before the launch so keep an eye out for a newsletter from us in the following weeks!
